Radioimmune & Inorganic Chemistry Section - Acting Chief 4/97 - 11/01

Tenured Section Chief 11/20/01 - present

Brechbiel has been at the NIH for more than 21 years since leaving industry to join the Radioimmune & Inorganic Chemistry Section.   While there he obtained his Ph.D. and remained to continue research into identifying and synthesizing bifunctional agents for conjugation of metallic radionuclides such as 212,213 Bi to proteins.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: The development of b ifunctional chelating and their syntheses for radiolabeling proteins and peptides, the synthesis and evaluation of novel chelating agents for medicinal applications (MRI, Fe(III/II) sequestration agents, hydrolytically active Cu(II) complexes, etc.), synthesis of polyamino compounds in general (chelating agents, catalysts, natural products, etc), immunoconjugates of cytotoxic natural products. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: Production of established bifunctional chelating agents for pre-clinical experiments and clinical trials.   Preparation of novel macrocyclic chelating agents for actinide and lanthanide radionuclide sequestration.   Effects of stereochemical constraints on conformation as applied to metal complex formation and stability.   Synthesis and evaluation of tripodal based ligands for medicinal applications.   Synthesis and evaluation of reagents for forming cytotoxic immunoconjugates with natural products.   Preparation and evaluation of macromolecular constructs for novel MRI imaging applications.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Organizer and chair/co-chair of numerous symposia on the use of radionuclides as radiopharmaceuticals. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: Member - American Chemical Society, Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, Division of Organic Chemistry; Member - Society of Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry and Biology

PUBLICATIONS: 232 publications and 23 patents issued.
