Fritz Vogtle studied chemistry in Freiburg as well as chemistry and medicine in Heidelberg. There he received his Ph. D. for research with Professor Heinz A. Staab in 1965 on the valence isomerization of double Schiff bases. After his habilitation on steric interactions inside cyclic compounds, he was professor in Würzburg from 1969 to 1975. He then accepted a position as full professor and director of the Kekulé -Institut für Organische Chemie und Biochemie in Bonn. He obtained a 'literature prize' of the 'Fonds der Chemischen Industrie' for his book 'Supramolecular Chemistry', the Lise Meitner-Alexander von Humboldt-award and the Adolf von Baeyer medal of the German Chemical Society. He has also been awarded a honorary philosophical doctor degree from University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He is the author of the books 'Fascinating Molecules', 'Cyclophane Chemistry' and a textbook 'Organic Chemistry' written in cooperation with H. R. Christen. In addition, he is co-author of the books 'Dendritic Molecules' and 'Dendrimers and Dendrons' and co-editor of the eleven volume series 'Comprehensive supramolecular Chemistry'. His research interests encompass supramolecular chemistry, dendrimers, cyclophanes, and interlocked and intertwined molecular architectures such as catenanes, rotaxanes, and molecular knots.
